Upcoming Events
Synod Assembly
The Southeastern Iowa Synod Assembly will be Friday, 12 June and Saturday, 13 June at Wartburg College
in Waverly. Pastor Brenda, Judy Toy, and Kirk Wilkie will attend as Holy Redeemers voting members. Brett
Nitzschke will attend as a visitor.
Mission of Hope Luncheon
A Mission of Hope luncheon is being provided and served by the youth of Holy Redeemer on
Thursday, 18 June 2009. Holy Redeemer continues its commitment to serving lunch at
Mission of Hope the 3rd Thursday of each month.
If you'd like to help with Mission of Hope lunches or you'd like your group to provide and serve one month,
please contact a member of the Outreach Committee. Refer to Mission of Hope (in our Ministries section) for more
information about Mission of Hope and how you can help.
Mardi Gras Dinner
Now an annual tradition, join the HRLC youth for dinner on Friday, 19 June 2009 at 6:00 PM. In the spirit
of the 2009 ELCA National Youth Gathering, Jesus, Justice, and Jazz, the dinner will be Mardi Gras style and
feature a youth mime about Jesus' life. The youth will also raffle gift baskets. Free will offerings are
greatly appreciated.
VBS/Night Camp
"Son Rock Kids Camp" will be held Sunday, 21 June through Thursday, 25 June 2009 from 6:30 - 8:30 PM.
In addition to "regular" camp activities, the group is planning a service project to make baggies for flood
volunteers coming in our community. Donations of various items for these baggies will be accepted through Sunday,
14 June 2009. Contact Shari Singelstad, Candy Krambeer, or Shelly Davidson for details.
Adult Education Opportunities
Duing VBS/Night Camp: This year at VBS and Night Camp, there will once again be an adult education
opportunity. Pastor will offer the group the chance to explore the sermon writing process (homiletics)from
scripture study to interpretation and composition. We will use the texts appointed for the weekend following
VBS and Night Camp. No one will be required to write a sermon ... unless you want to do so! This is just an
opportunity to explore the scripture and think about how it can be applied to daily life in a new way. Please
bring a Bible (whatever version you would like), pen, and paper to class.
In the Fall: Because there is currently so much talk about marriage (What is "marriage"? Who can be
married? Who cannot be married? What does the Church say about this?), we will once again take some time to
discuss such issues during the month of September. We will revisit some of the discussion we had during our
use of the ELCA sexuality studies, and discuss the recent decision in favor of same-sex unions in Iowa.
These sessions will be 20 and 27 September, but if necessary, we can continue on after that.
In October, we will begin a study on consumerism in our world. Why do we feel we need to have so much "stuff"?
How does this relate to our faith? Join us for these two topics!
Outdoor Worship Service
Holy Redeemers Annual Outdoor Worship Service and All-Church Picnic will be held Sunday, August 23,
at the Harborview Pavilion in Ellis Park. The service will be at 10:00 a.m. immediately followed by games and
a picnic lunch. Watch for details in our July and August newsletters and bulletins.
Fellowship with the Kernels
Our annual baseball game at Perfect Game Field will be Sunday, August 30 at 2:00 p.m. to watch the
Kernels play Peoria. More information will be in the July newsletter, and a signup sheet will be posted in
July. If you have any questions, please contact Shari Singelstad.
