Resources From the Pastor August 2006
From the Pastor
August 2006
More than 40 hours on a bus. 98+ degree temperatures. Walks from the hotel to the Convention Center,
from the hotel to the Dome and back again. 25,000 people—all trying to get into the Alamo Dome at the same
time. Lines. Lines. More lines.
Will these be the main things the 8 youth and 4 adults from Holy Redeemer who attended the ELCA Youth
Gathering in San Antonio will remember as they reflect on the experience? Or will they focus more on:
Inspiring speakers who spoke poignantly about everything from dish soap to immigration to health care
to hunger. Great bands and new songs ("E-L-C-A! It's fun to be in the E-L-C-A!"). The chance to study
the Word and share the Meal with 25,000 people—Lutherans from every part of the United States and from many
various countries. The Interaction Center, with all of the many things to see, to do, to learn, and to
experience. The opportunity to hear ELCA Presiding Bishop Mark Hanson preach at the closing worship...and to
have him lead the whole Dome in the Wave!
I hope this is what the 12 of us will remember best. I hope that we will remember that we were inspired
by the Bible studies, the speakers, and the music, and challenged to find ways to be witnesses to
Jesus in every aspect of our lives. I hope that we will remember that we are
called to serve those in need and to use our voices, our hands, and all our
gifts to make our Lord known!
And I hope that we will remember to give thanks
to and for all of you who supported us as we raised money and as we traveled.
Thanks for the prayers and the ongoing love...we do appreciate it, and we will remember.
In Christ,
Pastor Brenda
