Lutheran Services of Iowa
Never in recent history has Iowa seen a year like 2008. Tornadoes and floods ravaged homes and lives, and
the economy began its fall, creating struggles for all Iowans.
However, through all of these disasters, Iowans pulled together like never before. Communities came together
to save businesses, homes and lives. Neighbors helped neighbors even when they were no better off in their
own situations. The true spirit of Iowa shined brightly for the world to see in one of our darkest hours.
This spirit also shined bright for the children, families and individuals Lutheran Services in Iowa empowers.
The generosity of donors and volunteers was greater in 2008 than ever before, even through the difficult
conditions in our state, nation and world.
This generosity created a strong foundation for LSI and our dedicated staff as we carried out our important
work during these adverse circumstances. And, when LSI stepped strongly into our role as the Iowa affiliate
of Lutheran Disaster Response; churches, businesses and individuals overwhelmingly answered our call for
additional support to assist people in addressing unmet needs. This response has allowed us to play a
leading role in the states recovery effort and assist many families in finding the resources they need to
build a new life.
As the effects of natural disasters linger and the economy continues to falter, LSI understands these
challenges will surely createeven more need for our services. More Iowans will become part of our most
vulnerable population, and LSI will be called upon to be there as part of the solution. We expect this
and believe it our calling that through Christ we can and will be a light that shines brightly for all
Iowans in difficult situations.
LSI looks ahead with optimism because we know you are there to be part of our life changing services. We
know that as an agency we are in the right place, at the right time and doing the right work. We know
through our partnerships and the support of those who believe in our mission that we will succeed in making
our communities better places.
